Father Confessional:

The truth comes out in the car

Stories I've collected during my time on the road as an Uber driver in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. You'll never believe what people will tell an Uber driver, the truth really does come out in the car!

Meet your Driver

For the last eight years I have been driving Uber on the side. It has been a great financial help for the family, particularly when I have income from other sources that fluctuates. But there is another side. That side is the people you meet in the car and your conversations. Plus, one sees and hears what happens in a city. To date, I have done over 18,300 rides. That is a lot of people I have met and a lot of conversations. Very rarely do you have the same person, although it happens...

The Confessions

Stories from the road

A young man and woman are standing by a waterfront railing, engaged in a cheerful conversation. The man, wearing a green t-shirt and a black-and-white checkered shirt, is leaning against the railing, smiling at the woman. The woman, dressed in a denim jacket and a striped shirt, is gesturing with her hands as she talks to him. The background is a hazy view of a city skyline across the water.

When do you call someone your missus?

May 26, 20241 min read

As I was listening to conversations between young guys, maybe teenagers or those in their early twenties, they kept using the term “my missus”.

So I started to ask them: Are you married? No was generally the case, but they still referred to their girlfriends as their “missus”.

It seems that this is a common term that, after a set period of what they considered to be an appropriate time, they would use to describe their girlfriends.

In my day, you wouldn’t call someone your “missus” until you were married. But with the change in people living together before they get married, or even the high number of people having sex before they get married, this now seems to be the norm.

So I guess the question is: what is an an appropriate amount of time after you have started going out do you call someone your “missus”?

Would love to hear your feedback on this.
